Eating fried foods may increase your risk of severe heart disease and stroke, according to a new analysis of existing research.
According to a comparison between those who ate the least fried foods per week, the people who ate the most fried foods had a 28% higher risk of suffering major cardiovascular events. Also a 22% higher risk of coronary heart disease and a 37% higher risk of heart failure.
Each additional 114 grams or 4 ounce (½ cup) serving per week of fried foods increased the risk of heart attack and stroke by 3%, the study found. That same amount increased the risk of heart disease by 2% and heart failure by 12%, according to the analysis. A medium serving of McDonald’s fries, for example, is 117 grams.
But how do fried foods and trans fats work in our body?
When food is fried in oil, it absorbs part of it, which increases calories in a very high way.
In addition, commercially fried and processed foods can contain trans fats, these fats are created by an industrialized process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid, examples of these are semi-soft margarine and vegetable shortening.
The reason why these types of fatty foods are produced is because they are cheap and easy to produce as well as they give flavor and texture.
According to the US Food and Drug Association (FDA), it banned trans fats in 2015. However, it has extended the deadlines. The latter gave companies until June 18, 2019 to stop making food. And until January 1, 2021 for these products to finish their process in the market.
Therefore, the FDA allows companies to label a food with "0 grams" of trans fat, if a serving of the food contains less than 0.5 grams.
It is important to note that although reducing fat intake is a logical part of a healthy diet, it is also important to look at which foods are eaten instead
